![]() Through the years, Rita distinguished herself as a humble, zealous religious woman in prayer and in all tasks with which she was entrusted, and as one capable of frequent fasting and penance. It is reported that the Abbess, to try Rita's humility during her novitiate, asked her to water an arid wood, and that her obedience was rewarded by God with a lush growth that flourishes to this day. Rita’s prayers and the intercessions of her patron saints instead lead to the peace between the families involved in the killing of Paolo di Mancino, and after so many obstacles, she was allowed to enter the monastery. At the age of 36, she asks to be welcomed by the Augustinian nuns of the Monastery of Santa Maria Maddalena of Cascia, but her request is rejected: the religious, perhaps, feared the entrance of Rita - a widow of a murdered man - whose presence might have jeopardized the security of their community. Left alone in the world, Rita began a life of more intense prayer for her dear deceased family members, but also for the di Mancino family, that they might forgive and find peace. ![]() A disease caused the death of Giangiacomo and Paul Maria: her only comfort was to think of their souls, no longer in danger after escaping the climate of retaliation aroused by the murder of her spouse, their father. Rita did not cease to pray that more bloodshed be spared, making of prayer her weapon and consolation.Nevertheless, the tribulations did not cease. In her heart Rita forgives her husband’s murderers, but the Mancino family refused to let the incident pass unanswered, and pressed for revenge. To avoid having the children seek revenge, Rita hid their father’s bloody shirt. Their domestic serenity would not last, however, owing to the implacable factional strife of the era, in which Rita’s husband was involved owing to his kinship bonds, and was murdered. With love, understanding and patience, that of Rita and Paolo became a fruitful union, cheered by the arrival of two male children: Giangiacomo and Paolo Maria. The young Rita, however, through prayer, patience, and the ability to pacify that she learned from his parents, helped her spouse slowly but surely to live a more authentically Christian way of life. Society was rife with controversies and political rivalries, in which Rita’s husband was involved. Wife and motherĪround 1385, she married Paolo di Ferdinando di Mancino. John the Baptist, and Nicholas of Tolentino, whom Rita chose as his patron saints. From the friars, Rita learned devotion to St. Her parents, poor farmers and peasants, made sure she had good schooling and religious education in the nearby Cascia, in the care of the Augustinian friars. Margherita Lotti - “Rita” for short - was born in the small township of Roccaporena in Umbria, probably in 1371.

Added to this is a distinctly serviceable script by director David Koepp, who allows Ileana Douglas to tell Maggie chirpily: "What you need is a young priest with smouldering good looks who can get you through all this!" It is the most squeaming tooth scene since Richard Burton demonstrated John Hurt's utter physical abasement in the adaptation of Orwell's 1984 by pincering one of his teeth out with his finger and thumb.īacon himself endures all this sturdily, looking far younger than his years, and with his shirt off, his musculature has only slightly less definition than it did in Apollo 13, but still in good nick, and perfectly in line with the Abs Tyranny of modern Hollywood. And there is a clammy dream sequence in which Bacon visits the bathroom and seeing that one of his front teeth has gone completely rotten, colour of reddish mud, reaches into his mouth and after some effort pulls it out of his head together with a gout of blood. But thankfully, it is not encumbered with a twist ending, and avoids all the silliness that finally sank Sixth Sense.Īnd the moments in which a child is menaced by a dead person are enjoyably unpleasant, especially the scene in which little Jake is trying to watch HR Pufnstuf on TV but the ghost keeps changing the channel to the horror film that he's not allowed to watch - which keeps playing even when the deeply bewildered Jake has actually pulled the plug out of the wall.īacon's own contact with the dead works best when it manifests itself in little glimpses of horror and desecration: the dreamed moment when a fingernail - perhaps Bacon's fingernail - is snapped off with a wince-inducing crack. Naturally, Stir of Echoes has elements of a Sixth Sense knock-off, especially when Bacon goes all cold and his breath condenses. And this gives him something in common with his son Jake, who communicates with the great beyond also, whispering things like: "Does it hurt being dead?" She says he is not open to new experiences, and in her New Agey way hypnotises him, causing the initially derisive Bacon to succumb utterly and undergo a terrifying sense of communicating with the dead. His wife Maggie (Kathryn Erbe) sours his mood by telling him she is pregnant again, placing his music ambitions even further out of reach and it is at this point that grouchy Tom is riled by his sister-in-law Illeana Douglas: another classic supporting player, whose jolie-laide looks condemn her to best-friend roles and making the leading lady look good. ![]() So it is with something of a pang that Bacon's fans will see him bestow his presence on Stir of Echoes: an efficient and entertaining ghost story updated from an old tale by Richard Matheson, who wrote the screenplay for The Incredible Shrinking Man and the novel on which Spielberg based Duel.īacon plays Tom, a blue-collar Chicago guy who works for the telephone company, married with a five-year-old boy, and idly dreaming of making it as a rock musician. ![]() (There used to be a similar game of being six handshakes away from Mao Zedong - you could win by getting within five handshakes of Edward Heath.) He's not obscure enough for that to be interesting and you can play the six-removes game with anyone. Playing comedy could be an option for him of course: and yet he could be too subtle for the very broad neo-Jerry-Lewis style now in fashion and even the famous "Six Degrees" game is a slight on his abilities and achievements. ![]() Although he has always been a plausible leading player, actual stardom has always eluded him. The classic definition of a star is someone with something missing rather than something extra and maybe Bacon has never had it missing, or not enough of it missing. Can it really be true that Kevin Bacon is just a couple of months shy of his 42nd birthday? This actor, who first came to our attention in Barry Levinson's Diner 18 years ago, has maintained effectively the same faintly overlooked presence ever since: coiled, muscular, yet open and always youthful and verging on naivety, with an agreeable, intelligent identity that suggests an existence outside the world of acting. Gaining respect in the medical sleep community Benasich’s product is supported by corresponding research that she conducted, published in March 2023, that shows infants had more efficient syllabic processing efficiency at the 9- and 12-month marks, and also had improved language scores at 12 and 18 months. In addition, it concludes that it can be harmful to mask human speech sounds. Additional research has shown that babies in the NICU in particular might have overexposure to high-frequency noise, disrupting the necessary development of auditory cortical circuits. “Why would you take the chance in delaying that? It’s such a critical period when language is being set up… the brain is very busy,” she adds. ![]() No research has proven white noise is “bad” for human infants, she says, though it’s been shown to interfere for animal infants researchers have studied. ![]() She gives the example of using white noise for a few minutes to put your baby to sleep being not a problem, but that parents using it all night poses an issue. “They do this normally and naturally, but if you’re using sounds to block out background noise or using a sound soother to help your baby go to sleep, that’s fine, but sounds that block these specific acoustic cues can be problematic, particularly for kids who are at risk because of some other risk factor,” she says, pointing to the need for additional research on the topic. Instead, she cautions against sound machines blocking out typical acoustic cues naturally in a baby’s environment, that are being drowned out by white, green, brown, and other colored noise, among other typical soundtracks. Benasich will also be the first to say that you don’t have to have this exact sound machine. Is there a healthier alternative to white noises, and other traditional sound machines?ĭr. In tens of milliseconds, short patterns of sound “tickle the brain” and are complex, changing over time, she says. “Womb sounds have lots of variation and an underlayer and overlayer of sounds - babies begin to learn about speech sounds in their last trimester, when they are hearing muffled but distinct lower frequency sounds that help the brain set up those linguistic networks,” Dr. Or, you might find yourself in a more realistic womb setting than the “perfect” womb, in which you can hear additional rustling or jostling that isn’t as repetitive as other products might have. But what you’ll also notice if you listen closely, are those cues that differentiate it from other sound machines, such as a twig cracking in the nature scene. If you listen to RAPT’s Smarter Sleep sound machine, you will hear noises that seem typical of any sound machine, like a nature scene with leaves and a pleasant breeze. “Our goal was to take the sound machine, which is typically just used to promote sleep, and add an enriched supportive auditory environment that is more beneficial for a baby’s development,” Benasich adds. ![]() “It analyzes the speech stream and segments it this word begins and ends here, this sound belongs to this other sound.” The Smarter Sleep Machine is different from your average white noise machine because it uses subtle but structured acoustic cues built into the soundtrack that stimulates an infant’s efforts to identify sound to build those language networks. “Lots of parents don’t know that when their babies are sleeping, their brains are very busy…they are setting up these networks and listening for specific sounds that the brain analyzes statistically,” she says. ![]() Solomon Endowed Chair in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience at Rutgers University, and the director of the Infancy Studies Laboratory at the Center for Molecular & Behavioral Neuroscience, explains the need for a smarter sound machine. Building the Smarter Sound Machineīenasich, who is the Elizabeth H. The Smarter Sleep sound machine is designed not to just drown out noisy dogs and siblings in the background during nap time, but to encourage cognitive development in the sleeping baby’s brain. April Benasich, who offers a “smart” sound machine for babies and kids, says it might be time to ask different questions entirely in order to find the most optimal product for your baby’s development. What’s going to drown out all that background noise? What sounds most like the womb? What will give us just a tiny bit more shut-eye as brand new parents? All valid questions, and key considerations when they shop for this product.īut neuroscientist and co-founder of RAPT Ventures Inc., Dr. In pregnancy or early days after a baby’s birth, parents often find themselves shopping for a sound machine for their nursery. Sometimes you just need an afternoon away to feel refreshed. It's a well-captured and spirited performance- "a most enchanting night," as Berman puts it- and a fine between-albums teaser for fans can't get quite enough of My Morning Jacket's unique brand of sonic seduction.By Cameron Sperance, author of Moon 52 Things to Do in Boston It's not really going out on a limb to say that this is required listening for any established My Morning Jacket fan, even if newcomers would do better to start with one of their three full-lengths (take your pick they're all fantastic). The version of "Sooner", originally from the Chocolate & Ice EP, actually bests the original in some respects, particularly in the late verses when the guitars are replaced with an ominously beeping keyboard (featured in the original, but buried under a lot of other stuff) nicely befitting the Halloween milieu in which the song was performed. The effect is interesting, the band shuffling along with an easy groove while James climbs up into the ionosphere with his vocal booster rockets. "The Bear", from the band's debut, kicks off with the classic "Be My Baby" drumbeat, but with just the natural reverb of the Startime Pavilion, it sounds very different. The two fully arranged tracks that open the set are especially revealing. To hear these songs presented on record without the pools of reverb that My Morning Jacket's albums tend to float in is intriguing they hold up very nicely. Yet, these mistakes lend the music a sense of jovial intimacy, especially when set against the powerful directness of their content. ![]() Around the two-minute mark in a run through At Dawn's unrelentingly gorgeous "Bermuda Highway", James slips for a second on his acoustic and utters a barely audible little "oop!", and soon after that, almost bursts out laughing as he sings the verse twice by mistake. There's a laidback, unrehearsed feel to most of it, particularly the three stripped-down solo tracks. Perhaps what makes the passion behind the playing and singing on this EP most remarkable, though, is the fact that it was recorded at a very casual Halloween gathering in the most excellently named town in Massachusetts, Braintree. James doesn't even need to be saying anything to shiver spines, and when he lets his falsetto rip on a wordless passage of "mmm's" and "aaah's" at the end of this version of "Golden", it's one of the absolute highlights of a pretty strong set. James is one of those people who's been blessed with a voice that you could never mistake for another- it's a clean, piercing tenor that reveals vulnerability when needed, but mostly just soars. But when he sings it over a spare arrangement of two acoustic guitars on the new live EP Acoustic Citsuoca, there's no hint of nervousness or hesitation- he just goes for it. It's hard to think of a more poignant evocation of the mix of nerves and adrenaline that precede a live performance. My Morning Jacket's Jim James sings those words on "Golden", the effervescent centerpiece of last year's excellent It Still Moves. No one is quite sure how big it is, but suffice to say it’s enormous. The ceiling is made of golden shields, with rafters made from spears. With infinite food and drink, and a constant supply of endless war, what’s not to love? What does Valhalla look like?Īs you might expect for a glorious afterlife hall, Valhalla is said to be quite stunning to behold. It’s little wonder that warriors are literally fighting to get into Valhalla. Washing all that delicious boar meat down, they’ll need millions of bees to make enough honey for their mead, right? Well, no! In fact, they simply need the goat, Heiðrún, whose udders are able to produce an infinite supply of the finest mead known to man. Instead, the huge boar Saehrimnir is big enough to feed all of the men and luckily it too regenerates at night. And thankfully it doesn’t take a herd of wild animals to keep them fed. If you’re thinking they must get hungry then you’re right. Fortunately, in Valhalla, all your wounds are healed every night and you can begin the day fighting fresh. Of course, all of this fighting is still likely to hurt, even if you’re undead. This gives warriors the best training to defeat the Jotnar. The fighting, in fact, is pretty endless and takes a lot of the day. With all those warrior souls around you can guarantee there’s a lot of fighting. Well, as you can imagine it’s a pretty tough life preparing to fight the final battle at the end of the world. In fact, most people now believe that, far from simply picking from the dead, the Valkyries actively chose those who would die in the battle and sealed their fates to ensure that the very best warriors took their place in Valhalla, ready to fight alongside Odin in the battle of Ragnarök. Others, however, think it’s much more twisted than that! Some people believe this means that, after the battle they pick the ones they want to go to Valhalla. Valkyrie translates roughly as ‘chooser of the slain’. The rest we’ll deal with later but for now we get to meet the Valkyries. ![]() Only half of those killed on the battle fields go to Valhalla. Instead, you must bring glory to the battle on your way to meet your grizzly end!īut even that may not be enough. You can’t simply fall on your own sword during a battle, or hang around waiting for someone to do you in. The prime factor is generally believed to be ‘die a glorious death’. There’s some disagreement between scholars on exactly how you get to Valhalla. The surviving gods meet and the world is repopulated by two survivors. After Ragnarök the world is refreshed and renewed. Many of the familiar gods, such as Odin, Thor, Heimdall and Loki lose their lives. In particular, all those slain come back to life and there’s a huge battle between the Gods of Asgard on one side and the Jötnar, or giants, on the other side. ![]() Usually taken to mean ‘the final destiny of the Gods’, a series of events, are foretold, including natural disasters and the world being submerged in water. Ragnarök, another well-known but poorly understood Norse concept, is similar to armageddon or the end of days. ![]() ![]() They have to prepare for the events of Ragnarök. Instead of sitting around on clouds, playing lutes, the Einherjar actually have important work to do. This is the plural of Einheri, literally ‘army of one’, so they’re the most fearsome and brutal of warriors.Įven though they may be dead, and passed on from the living realm, that’s not the end of their days. The people who reside in Valhalla are known collectively as the Einherjar. All mythologies have afterlife components and Norse mythology is no exception. So, What is Valhalla there for?Īt its simplest, Valhalla is where warriors killed in battle go after death. So, join me as we take a deep dive into faith in the Viking Age and look at what really goes on in glorious Valhalla. Valhalla is a hall of the slain, this is true, but it’s not simply a passive, eternal afterlife kinda deal. Most people imagine this as some kind of ‘Viking heaven’, and honestly, that’s a reasonable start.īut Valhalla is so much more than simply a Viking heaven. If you’re up to date in the world of video games, or you binge everything the streaming services have to offer, you’ll no doubt have heard of the Norse concept of Valhalla. What is it, and how is portrayed in popular culture? An introduction to Valhalla, often referred to as the Viking heaven. In 1996, amazingly only a year after the release of Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert broke sales records and went down as a phenomenon in the world of gaming. Initially planned as an expansion pack to the original game, Westwood decided Red Alert had so much going for it they decided to make it into a stand-alone title using the original’s game engine. Even today there are days of enjoyment to be found in Tiberian Dawn and you always feel as though you’re re-experiencing gaming history in the making. To this day the Tiberian Dawn story remains one of the most impressive settings for a game, with two diametrically opposed teams and wonderful weapons such as the Obelisk of Light and the Ion Cannon. ![]() The soundtrack is sublime and for me it’s one of the best in gaming history. The pre-game and in-game environments were so impressive – the detailed terrain was genuinely exciting to explore and building a new base was always fun. After a meteor landed on Earth, a substance known as Tiberian started to grow, and could be harvested for financial gain this was central to the plot.
